Project Pinwheel Garden
Every April, the Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center participates in National Child Abuse Prevention month (CAP month). The blue pinwheel is the nationally recognized symbol of CAP month and during April, child welfare agencies across the nation plant pinwheel gardens in honor of children everywhere. This year we have expanded to five pinwheel gardens! We are so thankful for the opportunity to partner with Wayne State University School of Social Work, Child and Family Services South Central Office (North Central and Western Wayne Pinwheel Vases inside) in Detroit, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wyandotte, and the Kids-TALK CAC’s two offices in Detroit and Southgate in our efforts to bring pinwheels to all parts of Wayne County.

During Child Abuse Prevention month, the pinwheel is used as a symbol for healthy, safe lives of all children. Planting a pinwheel garden is just one way of demonstrating that we all play a role when it comes to ensuring healthy starts for our nation’s children. As a response to Child Abuse Prevention month and Sexual Assault Awareness month, the Kids-TALK CAC also hosts the Annual Youth Poetry Slam during April. We do hope that you will consider partnering with us next year, as we are eager to continue to expand these beautiful gardens!
Poetry SlamIn April, our Kids-TALK Children’s Advocacy Center teamed up with the Museum of Contemporary Art - Detroit (MOCAD) to recognize Child Abuse Prevention Month and Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Youth from across the city and metro area competed in this open-themed poetry slam to raise their voices about events that have impacted them most deeply throughout their lives. The performers bravely spoke out about violence and trauma that they have personally experienced. Our congratulations to all of the young poets!
